Work for Hire
Foster Dickson is a writer, editor and teacher in Montgomery, Alabama. He is the author of three books: Kindling Not Yet Split (Court Street Press, 2002), I Just Make People Up: Ramblings with Clark Walker (NewSouth Books, 2009), and The Life and Poetry of John Beecher (Edwin Mellen Press, 2009), and the general editor of Treasuring Alabama's Black Belt (AUM/AHF, 2009).
Freelance Editing
I do consider projects that need a freelance editor to work on them. Rates vary and are negotiable. Standard rates for an individual author seeking help with an unpublished manuscript are either an agreed-upon rate per word or a flat fee, dependent on the type and extent of the work. I do editorial work with the newest style guides: 16th edition Chicago Manual, 7th edition MLA Style Guide, and 3rd edition MLA Scholarly Publishing Guide.
Freelance Writing
I am always glad to consider freelance writing assignments. My areas of specialty are: Southern studies, diversity issues, arts education, and English education. Pay rates will depend on the nature of the publication and its circulation/traffic, the extent of the assignment, and the length of time allowed to complete the assignment.
Book Reviewing
I not only accept book review assignments, I enjoy doing them. I was the staff book reviewer for Montgomery's now-defunct alternative newspaper King Kudzu for three years, from 2001-2004. I have also written book reviews for ForeWord Reviews, the Montgomery Advertiser, and MultiCultural Review. I will NOT accept offers of being paid by the author or publisher to review their own book.
Guest Artist or Consulting
To schedule a reading or book signing, or to have me come to your school or community group, please e-mail me to arrange dates, times, and fees. Any fees will be dependent on the event, the extent of my participation in the event, and the length of stay and travel. I am also willing to do consulting with schools that are trying to start or improve a school literary magazine or other publishing project. I have worked in book publishing for three years; spent eight years as the faculty advisor for BTW's literary magazine Graphophobia, four years on the poetry for people poster series, and three years on Newsprung, so I have the experience to provide suggestions that will work in schools and within budgets.
Grant Writing
I have experience applying for and winning grants, large and small, from the government, from corporate foundations, and from non-profit foundations. Examples include successful proposals for two $2,000 Teaching Tolerance grants from the Southern Poverty Law Center, two $1,000 Gannett Foundation grants, numerous small mini-grants of less than $1,000, and a Surdna Foundation Arts Teacher Fellowship.
Curriculum Writing
I have experience writing curriculum, especially in the subjects pertaining to Alabama. I was the general editor of Treasuring Alabama's Black Belt and the writer of the curriculum guide for the forthcoming book, 'Til It's the Color of Me. I have also been a high school teacher for eight years.
